The Aries Team
Gary Chamberlin
Project Manager
Gary Chamberlin was educated at Shene Grammar School and St John's College, Cambridge, where he read maths. He has worked in operational research and actuarial consultancy, and edited the collected papers of the celebrated actuary Frank Redington. His interest in artificial intelligence led him in 1985 to help found the Aries project for expert systems in insurance, by collaborating with a group of leading companies in the industry.
The chief fruit of this work today is the Aries Pensions System, now widely used across the UK by insurers, consultants and administrators. Gary remains responsible for overall project management and the future direction of the work, as well as the extensive pension calculations which the system offers.
Gary enjoys applying the inventive powers of the mind to practical situations. Apart from Aries, he also played a leading role in founding the Grand Union Housing Co-operative in Bethnal Green, and the Edmund Burke Society in honour of the great 18th Century statesman and political philosopher. He is aghast at the modern trend to legislate for every last detail of life, and believes that about 80% of current pensions regulation should be consigned to Room 101.
